Episode 101: Welcome to Planet Earth (1996)

WELCOME TA EARF!

We were joined this week by our good friend (and local comic), Rob Pierce! He graced us- not only with his presence- but with a truly enjoyable second-class gem: Welcome to Planet Earth.

Our story begins with Joseph! Having just inherited his deceased mother’s boarding house in a dangerous urban neighborhood, he’s short on cash and desperate to find some tenants as soon as possible. Lucky for him, that very evening Charlie, Rhonda and their daughter Daphne show up on his doorstep- looking like they just stepped out of a Normal Rockwell painting, and needing a place to rent. At first it seems too good to be true, rich white folks with money to burn, who are all too pleased that Joseph wants to bang their daughter. But are they what they seem? Or are they aliens vacationing on Earth, here to take in all the sights and vigilante justice the inner-city has to offer? Only time will tell!

Welcome to Planet Earth stars George Wendt and Shanna Reed, and is truly a bizarre and unique film. We discuss this movie’s oddly adept social commentary and clever dialogue, the sexiness of violent women, and why Joseph’s mom loves singing in the graveyard.

Episode 99: Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer (2000)

Merry Christmas, gentlefolk!
We’re deep in the holiday spirit here at Second Class Cinema, and Tom’s pick for the week says it all. We watched yet another weird Canadian animated Christmas film, Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.

This film covers the age-old Christmas tropes of greed, capitalism and hit and runs. No one in the Spankenheimer family believes Jake, when on Christmas eve, he tells them that he saw Grandma get run over by Santa’s sleigh. Nine months pass, with no word from Grandma, and surprisingly no one seems to give a shit. That is, until Jake’s gold-digging cousin Mel tricks Grampa into signing over the family store, which Mel intends to sell to the CEO of a giant corporation. Jake realizes it’s up to him to email Santa and venture to the North Pole to bring back Grandma, in one last attempt to save the family business.

This movie makes some interesting creative choices, to say the least. Listen up as we discuss Grampa’s senility, Santa’s secret dungeon, and how Grandma is likely a young, hot, were-reindeer. Merry Christmas!

Episode 90: The Guest (2014)

Welcome back, Citizens!
We jumped back in this week with Brittany’s pick, and after much consideration, she picked 2014’s The Guest, directed by Adam Wingard. Our good pal, Fallon, had recommended this flick with much enthusiasm, so who else would we invite to be OUR Guest on this episode?

After learning their son, Caleb, has died in the war in Afghanistan, the Peterson family is trying to hold it together and cope with their devastating loss. Soon after, they are visited by David- a fellow soldier, who claims that he was Caleb’s best friend, and is visiting them as Caleb had requested. David seems like a great guy- polite, reserved, helpful. He takes Caleb’s brother, Luke, under his wing and tries to help him deal with his high school bullies. He bonds with Caleb’s parents, and attracts the attention of Caleb’s sister, Anna. But soon strange things start happening, and Anna becomes increasingly suspicious of David, and sets out to discover who their house guest REALLY is…

This movie spans several genres and moods, and does so with surprising deftness. Listen up as we discuss a plethora of oddities, including: female attraction to intimidating sexuality, the fuckin’ rad synth soundtrack, erotic stabbings, and why sleeper-cell agents give weirdly good advice. Enjoy!

Episode 86: Meet the Applegates (1990)

Hellooooo, Citizens!

This week on SCC, we welcomed our friend, Gray, back to the show… And we even let him pick the flick!
Last time Gray was here, he and Tom bonded over a bizarrely traumatizing scene from a movie they had both seen as children. In the scene, a woman is in labor and gives birth to a weird, squishy egg- which is promptly stepped on, causing a gooey, slimy explosion. That movie was 1990’s Meet the Applegates. And you can bet your bottom dollar that that is what we watched this week.

The Applegates, are, statistically, the most average family in America. Dick (the father) is a normal, hard-working man, Jane (the mother) is a sweet homemaker-type, Sally (their daughter) is pretty and modest, and their son, Johnny, is the quintessential A-student (barring his weirdly forced love of heavy metal). But the Applegates have a secret… A dangerous secret. Are they what they appear to be? Or are they giant, humanoid insects from the Brazilian rainforest, trying to assimilate into American culture in order to carry out a sinister agenda?
WHO KNOWS?!

We’re pretty sure we had more fun discussing this movie than we had watching it, but we’ll take whatever we can get. This dredged up a lot of topics for us, including: films that scarred us for life, the lack of sexual consent in the 80’s and the religious implications of breaking a pinky-promise.

Episode 85: Rad (1986)

Good afternoon, gentlefolk!

For this week’s episode we were joined by our friend and first time guest, Christopher Brown. Christopher also picked the flick this week, and he graced us with the 1986 BMX movie, Rad.

Rad follows high school student, Christopher “Cru” Jones, in his quest to qualify for a major BMX race- Helltrack- which just happens to be taking place in the small town in which he lives. The only problem is that the race takes place the same day as the SATs, and Cru’s mom has strictly forbidden him from competing. However, this proves to be the least of his problems when he learns that Duke Best (owner of Mongoose), is throwing any and every rule at him to keep him from racing. Can the town band together and help Cru overcome this barrage of new obstacles, so he can triumph at Helltrack at last?

The title of this film pretty much describes exactly how we felt about it. This movie gave us a plethora of topics to discuss including (but not limited to) trick-riding as foreplay, ass-sliding, and the beta prep-course for T-1000 training.

Episode 80: Housebound (2014)

Hellooooo Citizens!

We’re officially off that hellish ride through space, and onto bigger and better things. It was Brittany’s turn to pick the flick this week, and feeling as though we deserved to treat ourselves, she selected 2014’s Housebound- a thriller/comedy straight out of New Zealand. Having heard nothing but great things about this movie, it felt a little indulgent… But hey, treat yo’self, amiright?

Housebound follows Kylie, a young delinquent who is sentenced to house arrest under her mother’s care after being arrested for breaking into an ATM. While stuck with her mother and stepfather, Kylie learns some disturbing things about their family home. Like how a teenage girl was murdered there decades ago… Back when their house was used as a mental institution. NBD. As Kylie becomes obsessed with solving the murder, things around the house just get weirder and weirder. Can she solve it before her and her mother become the killer’s next victims?

Episode 76: Leprechaun 4: In Space (1997)

In Space Month is FINALLY here on Second Class Cinema! But you all should have heard this in our April 1st episode. Sorry about that.

We kick it off with Brittany’s pick, Leprechaun 4: In Space! The rules of In Space Month are easy, we have to pick a movie that takes it franchise in to outer space. We were surprised to find out how little this actually happened but it happened enough for us to notice, so that’s a problem.

Special Guest Taryn came on to discuss this movie with us.
